Street kid saves dog from flooded car and breaks down in tears when he’s rewarded with his own room a week later – Story of the Day

A street kid risks his life to save a dog trapped in a flooded car. A week later, the dog’s owner takes him home and shows him a room that makes his troubled past fade away and he bursts into tears.
When all the doctors she had seen told her she could not have a child, Helen was devastated. It seemed she was destined to remain childless for the rest of her life.
“My girlfriend has acquaintances at the children’s home. Maybe you should visit… what do you think?” Helen’s husband Josh often suggested. He thought adopting a child would heal her, but she said she needed time to think.
One day, as she was driving home from the coffee shop, something dirty caught Helen’s attention. It seemed as if it was trying to extricate itself from a ditch. It was Ollie – a helpless little stray puppy struggling to find his way out.
A strange joy warmed Helen’s heart after seeing Ollie. Tears welled up in her eyes. “Poor thing! He needs our help. Let’s get him home!” she told Josh, rushing out of the car to help the pup.
“What makes Helen think that Ollie will fill the void in her heart?” Josh wondered, confused. “Hmm, okay! If he makes you happy, he’ll come home with us!” he said, laying little Ollie in her back seat, wrapped in a towel.
Ollie was scared and seemed suspicious of people. He curled up in the seat. Tears and fear filled his eyes as he whimpered in his dog language. He was afraid and hoped not to be pushed away again. Then he arrived at a place – that would be his home forever.
Two years later, Ollie wasn’t that shy little pup anymore. He had grown into a giant ball of fur who loved his mommy and daddy madly. Ollie was nothing short of a naughty child. He was Helen’s world, the light of her eyes, and she hated it when anyone called him a “rescue dog”.
“Oh my god, is that my room?” the boy cried, unable to hold back his tears after looking around.
“Ollie’s not my rescue dog. He’s like my son,” she often said. For Helen, this four-legged dog was her whole world. She had zero tolerance for people who couldn’t understand their precious relationship.
Helen and Ollie were the perfect mother and son duo. They never went out without each other. On a day like this, they hung out together in front of the supermarket, unprepared for what was about to happen.
“Hey boy, wait in the car. I’ll be right there, okay?” Helen said as she patted Ollie’s head before kissing him goodbye. She locked him in the car and went to the supermarket.
Ollie hated crowded places and never accompanied his mother to the store. So he preferred to curl up in the passenger seat and wait for his mother to come back.
Moments later, chaos suddenly broke out. Helen was busy shopping and had no idea it was raining heavily outside. The whole area unexpectedly began to flood. People rushed to every open shop and boutique they could find for shelter.
Matt, a 9-year-old homeless boy, was looking for somewhere to run to safety when he saw people flocking to a nearby grocery store. He didn’t have time to think and ran after them.
“The water has entered the store,” the manager shouted. “Everyone upstairs. Hurry.”
Matt hurried upstairs with the others. Helen noticed the confusion and was alarmed. “What happened?” she asked a man, screaming at the top of her lungs when she heard about the flood. All she could think about was Ollie trapped in the car.
“OLLIE… oh my god I left my dog in the car,” she yelled, running to the window. “My dog is stuck in the car. Somebody please…”Matt looked outside and saw that the car Helen was pointing to was about to sink in the flood. She was afraid to go out because she couldn’t swim. Matt understood Helen’s fear and ran to help her pet.
He grabbed an iron bar from the corner and ran down the stairs. “Hey kid, where are you going? You’re going to drown,” people shouted. But Matt turned a deaf ear to them because he was determined to save Ollie.
He braved the strong currents and swam to the car. He peeked through the window and saw a terrified Ollie staring at him with wide brown eyes. “Save me, man. Take me out. I can’t breathe and I’m scared,” they said painfully.
Matt smashed the window with the pole and grabbed Ollie’s collar. “Easy, boy, come here…” he said. He was afraid the dog would bite him. But Ollie wagged his tail and obeyed. He was pulled out safe and sound.
“My baby…Ollie…thank God you’re safe!” Helen cried as Matt picked up the dog and laid it on the car roof. Then he climbed to the top and sat down with Ollie, patting him gently to keep him calm and not frightened by the currents.
Minutes later, a rescue team arrived to take people to safety. Luckily it had stopped raining by then, which made their task easier. The rescue team got Matt and Ollie to safety.
“Olli,” Helen called. She tearfully hugged and kissed her dog multiple times, unable to forgive herself for leaving him alone in the car. “I’m so sorry my baby. What would I have done without you? Please forgive mom,” she sobbed.
Helen looked at Matt and started crying even more. “I don’t know how to thank you. You saved my baby’s life today.”
Matt smiled at her and got up to leave.
“Wait a minute… where are you going? Aren’t your parents here with you?” she asked.
“I have neither parents nor home,” Matt replied. “I have to go. The place where I sleep in the nearby parking lot must have been destroyed by the flood.
Helen was shocked. “You need to find a safer place?”
“Yes! I’m sleeping on a pile of old cardboard that I found in the dumpster. It must be wet and ruined now,” Matt replied. “I have to look for new cardboard to make my bed.”
“But why are you living on the streets?” Helen asked, curious to know more about the friendly boy.
Turns out Matt had lost his parents in an accident a few months ago and had no one to take him in. “When I lived with my parents, I always slept on my bed. I had a big room full of favorite cars and other toys. Unfortunately, I don’t have any of them anymore,” he recalled.
“Don’t you have an aunt or uncle? No grandparents?” Helen asked.
Matt buried his face in his palms and started to cry. “I don’t have anyone. My parents had sold the house and were planning to move abroad. But they died in a car accident and I heard people at the funeral talking about going to a children’s home. I ran away because I was scared. I didn’t want to go to a home.”
Helen felt sorry for Matt and was touched by his innocence. She realized that he needed more than just her gratitude. “He needs a home and someone to love him,” she thought, returning a week later to find the boy.
Josh and Helen drove to the parking lot to find Matt. They saw him curled up on a pile of old cardboard. “Hey… Matt, wake up… Hey…” she said, shaking the sleeping Matt up.
The boy was startled when he saw her. He didn’t understand why they had come for him. Ollie ran out of her car and started licking Matt’s face. He was confused and happy at the same time. The dog still remembered him and made him cry.
Are you coming with us?” Helen asked.
Matt was confused. “Coming with you? But where to?”
“Home!” Josh and Helen replied, helping the shocked Matt stand up.
They drove him to their house and showed him his new room, full of toys, colorful car posters and with a cozy bed in the corner, just like he dreamed of and used to have with his parents.
Matt hugged Josh and Helen and burst into tears. “Oh my god, is that my room?” he cried, unable to hold back his tears after looking around. “It looks almost like the bedroom I had when my parents were here.”
“Yes, it’s all yours!” Helen replied with tears in her eyes. Matt was happiest that day and was legally adopted shortly after. Josh and Helen have never regretted not having children of their own. For her, Ollie and Matt were two good reasons to live, laugh and be happy. They were her heaven, her earth and everything in between.
What can we learn from this story?
Every creature deserves love, not just people. When Helen couldn’t have children of her own, she was devastated. But her joy was restored when she found an abandoned Ollie fighting for his life and brought him home. She treated him like her son, not like a dog.
Be nice to those who are nice to you. Matt rescued Ollie from the drowning car. His kindness was rewarded when Helen and Josh adopted him as their son.
